A who's who of classical music composers could be the subtitle for this week's offerings from the Department of Music. Also featured this week is a performance of a composition written in memory of Carl Sagan. All performances are free and open to the public.
Senior Robert Horgan of Rhode Island presents a recital of organ music April 3 at 8:15 p.m. in Anabel Taylor Chapel. On the program are works by Bach, Mendelssohn, Mozart and Scott Joplin. Horgan, a student of University Organist Annette Richards, will earn a bachelor's degree in Asian Studies this May.
Music from the Court of Frederick the Great (1712-1786) will fill Barnes Hall April 4 at 8:15 p.m. with a performance by The Publick Musick, a period-instrument ensemble. All the music on the program was written for the king. The Publick Musick has performed at the Rochester Bach Festival, at the Brooklyn Museum and in a live broadcast on WGBH radio in Boston.
"New Music from Cornell," a performance of student compositions, will be held April 5 at 8:15 p.m. in Barnes Hall. The music was written by composition students of professors Steven Stuckey and Robert Sierro. They are: James Matheson, Paul Osterfield, Mihu Kugo, Peter Salvi and Vineet Shende. Salvi's In Memoriam Carl Sagan will be performed with Liisa Ambegaokar Grigorov on flute, Micaela Candwick on clarinet and Janna Solomon on bassoon.
The Schubert and Mendelssohn Festival continues Sunday, April 6 at 8:15 p.m. in Barnes Hall with an all-Schubert performance by the Florestan Trio. Violinist Ellen Jewett, Cellist Elizabeth Simkin and pianist Xak Bjerken will repeat their program Monday, April 7, at 8:15 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Ithaca, 306 N. Aurora St.
