Ornithology lab awarded: The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is one of six finalists in the environment, energy and agriculture category for the 2003 Computerworld Honors 21st Century Achievement Award. The award was given for the lab's efforts to digitize and make publicly accessible the entire recorded collection of the Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds. That collection includes sounds and videos of more than 10,000 species from around the world -- a total of more than 160,000 recordings. Said John Fitzpatrick, director of the ornithology lab, "We have worked very hard to put to use the advances of information technology for the benefit of science and conservation. We feel fortunate to have been recognized for our work."

Volunteer tutors needed: Literacy Volunteers of Tompkins County (LVTC) is currently seeking volunteers to become tutors. Volunteer tutors work with adult students to improve their English reading, writing and speaking skills. There also is a need for people who can assist students in improving their math and computer skills. Generally, volunteer tutors and students meet for two hours per week, setting those hours on the basis of their regular work schedules. Volunteer tutors are asked to commit to 15 hours of training, before tutoring, and one year of volunteer service to LVTC. This fall's training sessions will be held in late September and early October. For more information, call LVTC at 277-6442.
