Cornell Cinema's "Manufacturing Consent: The Press, Politics and the Powers That Be" series continues this month with four more programs, each with a guest artist in attendance.
Media activist and alternative television producer DeeDee Halleck will present clips from Deep Dish Television's 13-part series "Shocking and Awful: A Grassroots Response to War" on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7:15 p.m. in Willard Straight Theatre.
Egyptian-born, Harvard-educated documentary maker Jehane Noujaim is tentatively scheduled to present one or more of the screenings of her film "Control Room," a behind-the-scenes documentary about satellite news service Al Jazeera filmed during the recent American invasion of Iraq. The film will screen in Willard Straight Theatre Oct. 15 and 16 at 7:15 p.m., Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 18 at 9:15 p.m. Check Cornell Cinema's Web site, http://cinema.cornell.edu, or call 255-3522 to find out if and when Noujaim will be in attendance.
Frank H.T. Rhodes Class of '56 University Professor John Pilger, who is an investigative journalist, author and Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker, will introduce and discuss two of his documentaries the week of Oct. 18. "Breaking the Silence: Truth and Lies in the War on Terror" explores "liberated" Afghanistan where, since 2001, old warlords have regained power. It will screen Oct. 18 at 4:30 p.m. "Paying the Price: Killing the Children of Iraq" investigates the effects of U.N. sanctions on the people of Iraq during the 1990s, and it will be shown Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. Both these screenings will take place in Willard Straight Theatre and will be free and open to the public.
