Undergraduate students may enroll now through Nov. 10 for the popular course Mind and Memory: Explorations of Creativity in Arts and Sciences, offered in the spring semester of 2001.
The brainchild of James McConkey, Goldwin Smith Professor of English emeritus, this unique course features weekly lectures by distinguished members of the Cornell faculty from a wide range of disciplines.
As the course title suggests, the lectures explore the nature of creativity in art as well as in science and the dynamic role of memory in learning and discovery. Students get a first-hand glimpse of how various Cornell artists, scientists, engineers and humanists reach that almost unexplainable moment of creative insight into their work. Weekly discussions with guest faculty and speakers further examine aspects of the nature of creativity and directly involve participants in the creative aspects of the discussion leader's subject.
Spring 2001 guest speakers include Mary Gilliland, poet and director of the Walk-In Services for the writing program; Steven Stucky, composer and professor of music; Harry Greene, ecologist and professor of evolutionary biology; poet Sandra Steingraber; and Don Bartel, professor of mechanics and aerospace technology, who does work with joint prostheses.
Lectures are Mondays, 2:55 to 4:10 p.m., with most discussion sessions on Wednesdays during the same time period.
Students who miss the Nov. 10 deadline can enroll in "Mind and Memory" during registration for spring semester courses in January.
The Mind and Memory course, co-sponsored by the Cornell Council for the Arts and the Society for the Humanities, is cross-listed. Students may enroll via the following programs/departments and course numbers: Society for the Humanities 301; English 301; Theatre, Film and Dance 301; and Music 372.
