To help introduce to the Cornell community the new members of the university's faculty, the Cornell Chronicle is publishing brief, new-faculty profiles each week during the semester.

James R. Conant

Assistant professor, mathematics
College:Arts and Sciences
Academic focus:Finite type knot invariants, as well as their generalization and application to other categories, such as groups and higher dimensional knots. Current interests include attempting to understand how Habiro's clasper theory works for links.
Previous position:Graduate researcher, University of California-San Diego.

Sachin Gupta

Associate professor, marketing
College:Johnson Graduate School of Management
Academic focus:Research and teaching interests involve developing new models of marketing research. He currently is using models of web-based behavioral data to understand consumers' behavior online.
Previous position:Assistant professor of marketing, Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University, where he received the Sidney Levy Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Academic background:B.A., economics, St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, 1982; post-graduate diploma in management, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India, 1984; Ph.D., management, Cornell, 1993.

Christiane Linster

Assistant professor, neurobiology and behavior
College:Arts and Sciences
Academic focus: Research in the neural basis of sensory information processing; teaches computational neuroscience
Previous position:Senior research associate, department of psychology, Boston University.
Academic background:M.S., electrical engineering, Technical University (Graz, Austria), 1989; Ph.D., applied physics, Pierre and Marie University (Paris), 1993.

Warwick B. Tucker

Assistant professor, mathematics
College:Arts and Sciences
Academic focus:Chaotic dynamical systems with special emphasis on robustness of strange attractors, bifurcation theory, computational aspects of modeling chaotic systems and auto-validating algorithms. Also works with visualization techniques for complex systems.
Previous position:Visiting professor, Instituto de Matematica Pura e Aplicada, Rio de Janeiro, 1998-2000.
Academic background:B.A. (1996), L.A. (1996), Ph.D. (1998), all in mathematics from the Uppsala University, Sweden.
Collaborations: Member of Cornell's BRAIN (Big Red Artificial Intelligence Navigator) team.
