Registration
* Spring '01 registration: Registration is Thursday, Jan. 18, 8 a.m.-4:15 p.m., first floor, Caldwell Hall. All new students must check in at Caldwell Hall. Unregistered continuing students clear bursar holds by going to the bursar's office, Day Hall, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For other holds, go to the office where the hold was placed. Continuing students who clear university obligations will be registered automatically and only go to Caldwell Hall for course enrollment. To determine if you have a hold, check Just the Facts on Bear Access (beginning Jan. 15).
Financial
* Travel grants: Conference transportation grant applications are due at the Graduate Fellowship Office, Caldwell Hall, by Dec. 1 for January conferences. Late applications are not considered; grants are awarded to registered graduate students invited to present papers or posters. Application forms are at graduate field offices and on the web http://ww.gradschool.cornell.edu/grad/fellowships/intro.html.
* Social science fellowship: Applications for 2001-02 Social Science International Predissertation Fellowships are available in 155 Caldwell Hall; Ph.D. students. No citizenship requirements, but students are discouraged from studying their own culture. Deadline: Dec. 8 at Graduate School.
* Foreign research travel grants: International travel grants are administered through the Einaudi Center, 170 Uris Hall. Forms are available at the center. Deadline is Feb. 2, 2001, for travel between April 1, 2001, and June 30, 2002.
* FLAS fellowships: Applications for 2001-02 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships are available at the area studies programs (Latin America, Europe, South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia), first floor, Uris Hall, and on the web at http://www.einaudi.cornell.edu/. Consult the individual program about special application procedures. Deadline for completed applications: Feb. 12 for the East Asia Program and Jan. 29 for the other programs. Expected funding is $11,000 stipend for 9 months plus full tuition. Fellowships are open to citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
Degrees
* Thesis/dissertations: Submission deadline for a January 2001 degree is Jan. 12, 2001. Students should see the Graduate School thesis adviser for format approval before submitting final copies to the Graduate School. Office hours: 9 a.m.-noon, daily, and 1:30-3:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; walk-in basis only, no appointments. Professional master's degree candidates should check with their field offices regarding the deadline, which may be earlier than the Graduate School's.
Meetings and Workshops
* Office hours: The Graduate School offices will be closed during the university winter holiday, Monday, Dec. 25, through Monday, Jan. 1. Offices will reopen Tuesday, Jan. 2.
* Graduate Career Development Office: 325 Caldwell Hall. For graduate students interested in nonprofessorial positions, call 255-5184 for an individual appointment, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Open office hours are Thursdays, 1-4 p.m.
Job search workshop: Dec. 6, 4-5:30 p.m., 392 Caldwell Hall. Given by the Graduate School Career Development Office and International Students and Scholars Office, the workshop will give the first steps of a successful job search; includes questions about visas after graduation. Any graduate student who is now or will be in the job market in the next six to eight months is encouraged to attend.
