Willard Straight Hall's 75th anniversary to be celebrated Nov. 15-17

The Office of the Dean of Students and the Willard Straight Hall Program Board have invited the campus community to join in the "Celebrate the Straight!" events, Nov. 15-17.

Willard Straight Hall was one of the first university student union buildings constructed in the United States. Next week's celebrations mark the stately Gothic building's 75 years of service to the Cornell community.

Conceived as a memorial to Willard Dickerman Straight '01 by his wife, Dorothy Payne Whitney Straight, the plans for the building were approved by the Cornell Board of Trustees in 1922 and the building opened its doors Nov. 18, 1925.

Here is the schedule of free, 75th anniversary events:

· Wednesday, Nov. 15: A "Fireside Chat," featuring Gould Colman, former Cornell archivist, on "Willard Straight Hall, 1925 to the Present," in the Willard Straight Hall (WSH) Art Gallery, 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served; seating will be limited to 50.

· Thursday, Nov. 16: Coffeehouse with JOMO, "King of Kazoo." This longtime performer at WSH plays old-fashioned jug band songs from the 1920s, in the WSH Memorial Room, 8-10 p.m. Refreshments will include Chilly Willy's 75th -- the latest ice cream flavor created by the Cornell Dairy Store.

· Friday, Nov. 17: WSH Birthday Party. Music, refreshments, a huge WSH cake, Chilly Willy's 75th ice cream, guest speakers and a special appearance by "Dorothy Straight" (aka: Cornell's own Peggy Haine) in the WSH Memorial Room, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
