Briefs

Library hours and services: Most campus libraries will be closed during the holiday week, from Saturday, Dec. 23, through Monday, Jan. 1. Exceptions are:

Over the holiday week, Cornell Library will upgrade a number of its catalog functions. During the upgrade period, scheduled for Dec. 27-30, the catalog will be available for searching, but online patron services, such as holds, recalls and renewals, will be temporarily suspended. Library staff regret any inconvenience this may cause. For more information, contact Edward Weissman at 255-5754 or esw3@cornell.edu.

Faculty technology workshops: The Academic Technology Center is sponsoring a "Getting Started" workshop series for faculty Jan. 16-18. Faculty can learn how to select the technologies best suited to their teaching goals; create course web sites; put class discussions online; digitize text, images, sound and video; and use PowerPoint, Dreamweaver and Photoshop. There is no fee, but registration is required and enrollment is limited. Register by Jan. 12 at http://www.cit.cornell.edu/atc/materials/GS/schedule1_01.html.

English-language course: A noncredit course will be offered at Cornell for visiting academicians who seek improvement in any basic English-language skills, particularly speaking and listening comprehension. All language learning activities will be oriented toward what will be most useful to the scholars during their stay here. Practice in speaking and pronunciation will include formal presentations and individual help with pronunciation problems. In addition to the weekly classes, field trips are regularly scheduled to provide opportunities for discussion with native English speakers and insight into American culture and history. Classes are held Tuesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. and begin Jan. 23 and end May 1. The program fee is $450. Registrations should be submitted by Friday, Jan. 19. For registration information, contact Donna Colunio, School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, B20 Day Hall; telephone 255-7259; e-mail cusp@cornell.edu ; web www.sce.cornell.edu/exec.
