Introducing New Members of the Faculty
To help introduce to the Cornell community the new members of the
university's faculty, the Cornell Chronicle is
publishing brief, new-faculty profiles each week
during the semester.
Jianhua Fu
Assistant professor, molecular biology and genetics
College: Arts and Sciences
Academic focus: Crystal structure determination of RNA polymerase II. In
eukaryotes, like humans, genes in chromosomes are read by gigantic molecular
machines called RNA polymerase holoenzymes composed of tens of different protein
subunits. Fu seeks to understand the three-dimensional workings of these
multilayered protein machines.
Previous position: Postdoctoral fellow, department of structural
biology, Stanford University School of Medicine.
Academic background: B.S., biophysics, Fudan
University, Shanghai, China, 1983; and Ph.D., protein
crystallography, University of Pittsburgh, 1994.
Danny Manor
Assistant professor, nutritional sciences
College: Agriculture and Life Sciences
Academic focus: Regulation of mammalian cell growth; cancer, oncogenes
and anti-oxidants.
Previous position: Senior research associate, Cornell College of Veterinary
Medicine, 1997-2000.
Academic background: B.Sc., biochemistry, Tel Aviv University, Israel,
1982; and Ph.D., structural biology/biophysics, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, 1989.
Robert L. Strawderman III
Associate professor, biometrics
College: Agriculture and Life Sciences
Academic focus: Research interests cover a broad spectrum of statistical
theory and applications. Current research focuses on developing statistical methods for
analyzing time-to-event data (for example, post-treatment survival times for breast
cancer patients) and recurrent phenomena (for example, hospitalization rates for patients
with chronic diseases and rates of opportunistic infections among HIV patients). He
will begin teaching an undergraduate course on statistical inference next spring.
Previous position: Associate professor, Department of Biostatistics, University
of Michigan, 1992-2000.
Academic background: B.A., mathematics, Rutgers
University, 1988; Sc.M., biostatistics, 1990; and Sc.D.,
biostatistics, 1992, both from Harvard University.
