Sheryl Reiss, senior lecturer and senior research associate in the Department of the History of Art, has received a grant from the Renaissance Society of America to support research in Italy for her book The Making of a Medici Maecenas: Giulio de' Medici as a Patron of Art.


Kimberly Baldwin, education coordinator and internal medicine technician at the College of Veterinary Medicine's Companion Animal Hospital, was chosen to perform a wet lab demonstration on venous access at the North American Veterinary Conference in Orlando, Fla., last month. In addition, the publication of an article, "Placing an Intraosseous Catheter in the Canine Trochanteric Fossa," in the journal Veterinary Technician earned Baldwin the cover photo of the journal's December issue. The article described a better technique for administering fluids and medications to emergency patients.


Fourth-year doctoral student in pomology Kuo-Tan Li has received the 1999 Perrine Scholarship for his "outstanding work in pomology." Hugh Price, chair of the horticultural sciences department at Cornell's New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, presented the award to Li in December. The scholarship was established by David Perrine (Cornell '22) in 1993 to support pomology research at Geneva. The $2,000 award supports Li's Ph.D. research program and educational expenses.


The Laboratory of Plasma Studies has announced the 1999 Philip Champney Prize is awarded to Daniel B. Sinars, in recognition of exceptional performance as a graduate student at Cornell in pursuit of a Ph.D. in the Laboratory of Plasma Studies in the areas of plasma physics and pulsed power technology. Special consideration is given for demonstrating creativity and capability in experimental observations of fast z-pinches using X-ray back lighting. A certificate and a check were presented Jan. 28.
