United Way campaign: United Way of Tompkins County officially concludes its 1999 campaign March 31 with more donations than it's ever raised before: $1,732,190. Cornell staff and faculty helped with the banner year by exceeding the university's own campaign goal of $530,000 by more than $58,000. Other highlights of the 1999 campaign included Cornell employees and staff volunteers working on the United Way's Day of Caring; runners and walkers participating in the first 5k Run/Walk, with all proceeds benefiting programs and services funded by United Way; and Banfi's participating in the second Culinary Delight fund-raiser. United Way of Tompkins County is an independent nonprofit organization, incorporated and governed by local volunteers.

Women's studies fellowship: The Women's Studies Program announces a dissertation fellowship for 2000-01. Cornell graduate students whose dissertations will focus on women or gender issues are invited to apply for a fellowship to support their dissertation research. The fellowship will provide tuition and fees for the 2000-01 academic year along with a stipend. The application deadline is April 7. Further information on application requirements is available in the Women's Studies Program office, 391 Uris Hall.

Goethe Prize 2000: Juniors, seniors and graduate students are eligible to win up to $250, for a 10-20 page essay in German or English, and freshmen and sophomores up to $100, for a five-10 page essay, on any topic connected with German literature for the Goethe Prize 2000 competition. The Goethe Prize, endowed in 1935 by Ludwig Vogelstein, is awarded annually. The committee may award a first prize of $250 or $100 maximum and, possibly, a second prize. Essays should be submitted under an assumed name, but the author must indicate class (freshman, sophomore, etc.) on the essay and submit a sealed envelope containing his or her identity, student ID number and local address and telephone number. Each student may enter only one essay; former prize winners are not eligible, except that winners in the freshman/sophomore competition can enter the junior/senior competition when they have advanced to that status. The deadline for submissions is April 17 at noon in the Office of the Dean of the University Faculty, 315 Day Hall. For more information, contact Gesa Valk, 310 Morrill Hall, 254-6752, gmv2@cornell.edu .
