Music department offers six concerts April 27--May 3

As the semester winds down, the Cornell Department of Music presents a busy schedule of six free concerts this week.

Tonight, April 27, at 8 p.m. in Barnes Hall Auditorium, the Cornell Chamber Singers, conducted by Dimitri Shapovalov, presents a varied program featuring six sacred and secular works from the Renaissance and three from the 20th century.

The first half of the concert features madrigals by Desprez, Dowland, Morley, Farmer and Orlando di Lasso, as well as William Byrd's "Ave verum corpus." Following intermission, guest ensemble Vox Turturis presents selections from music of the late Medieval period. The concert closes with two sacred pieces by Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud's "Quatrains valaisans" and Samuel Barber's "Reincarnations."

The Cornell University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Mark Davis Scat-terday, presents a concert of six works Saturday, April 29, at 8 p.m. in Bailey Hall. On the program are Adam Gorb's "Awayday," Gustav Holst's "Hammersmith," Anthony Iannaconne's "Seadrift," Andrea Gabrieli's "Aria della battaglia," Joseph Schwantner's "In the Evening Stillness" and Michael Daugherty's "Niagara Falls."

The final concert for the week is a joint student recital Wednesday, May 3, at 8 p.m. in Barnes Hall. The first half of the program opens with a duet, Saint-Saëns' "Pastorale," followed by Murray singing four songs of Gabriel Fauré and Woolford presenting five movements from Vaughan Williams' "Songs of Travel."
