The Southern Finger Lakes area final of the Junior Solar Sprint competition gets under way at 9:30 a.m. at the Kite Hill tennis courts Saturday, May 13, when fifth-to-eighth graders from five upstate New York schools vie for a place in the 2000 championship for miniature solar cars they have designed and built themselves. The annual competition is hosted by the technology education program at Ithaca's DeWitt Middle School, working with Cornell mechanical and aerospace engineering undergraduates Keith Epstein and Chris Consolati.
Judges for the competition will be Michel Louge, Cornell professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, Benjamin Nichols, professor emeritus of electrical engineering, and consulting mechanical engineer Alec Wright.
Students with the highest scoring vehicles will qualify for the championship in Turners Falls, Mass.
