At right, Bill Bintzer, '73 Arch., and his son, Will, 12, from Mamaroneck, N.Y., look at a model in the Hartell Gallery of Sibley Hall by alumnus Warren Schwartz '65 proposing a library addition to Sibley Hall. The model, which was not adapted, was part of a three-gallery campus exhibition of the work of 11 artists and architects from the College of Architecture, Art and Planning (AAP) Class of '65.
A grant from Cornell Alumni Federation made it possible for alumni Phil and Maddy Handler to develop the special project, "Cornell AAP: Catalyst for Creativity." The project included the exhibition in the Sibley and Tjaden galleries and in the Johnson Museum lobby June 8-10, a video showing interviews with each of the exhibitors and a panel discussion in Sibley Hall June 9.
During the panel, 10 professional architects and artists from the Class of '65 discussed the disparity between the training they received and their real-world experience. Post-college, they soon discovered that the actual work of designing and building edifices required more practical, hands-on skills than they possessed and that few artists were able to support themselves fully through sales of their work. Nevertheless, many persevered, continue to practice their craft today and have gone on to achieve significant success.
The Handlers are proposing to organize exhibitions and produce videos of the work of college alumni for future reunions as well.
