In April, Cornell Information Technologies began moving the university's cellular phone users to Verizon Wireless. To date, approximately 250 cell phones have been switched. CIT had planned to continue the process throughout the summer, but two unexpected issues have resulted in a decision to postpone additional transitions.
First, Verizon Wireless has experienced an overwhelming demand for service from Cornell, Ithaca and the surrounding areas. The increased load on its Ithaca cellular tower is causing some intermittent disruption for cellular customers. Verizon Wireless is monitoring this traffic daily and will be adding additional capacity to this tower to manage the traffic more effectively.
Second, the placement of the cellular antenna for the Cornell campus -- which should greatly improve service quality on campus -- has been complicated and complex. Construction issues, building structure and campus approvals have caused delays. The antenna is expected to be installed in late August or September.
Once the antenna is installed, CIT will resume moving the remaining Cornell cellular users to Verizon Wireless. Until then, customers who currently use Cellular One will continue with that service.
CIT will be completing the transition for departments that have already begun switching to Verizon Wireless and will continue to work with faculty and staff who have an emergency situation.
Cellular transition forms also will continue to be processed. Telecommunication coordinators are encouraged to complete and return their transition forms to allow the paperwork to be processed and placed in queue for the completion of the antenna installation.
Departments can contact Verizon Wireless at 227-5000 if they would like a representative to meet with their staff to determine the best service plan or to address any questions. Details about Verizon Wireless can be found at http://www.cit.cornell.edu/cellphone/.
