Mann online site selected: The online Dow Jones Business Directory has chosen the Albert R. Mann Library's USDA Economics and Statistics System as a "select site." "This nifty site brings to one centralized stall a bumper crop of useful statistics and reports on everything from broccoli production to Year 2000 issues affecting farmers," said Grace Lichtenstein, a web-site reviewer for the Dow Jones Business Directory editors. She explains that the Mann site publishes information from three data-collection departments within the U.S. Department of Agriculture -- the Economic Research Service, the World Agricultural Outlook Board and the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Mann Library's USDA Economics and Statistics System is available at: usda.mannlib.cornell.edu/. The Dow Jones Business Directory is available at http://bd.dowjones.com.
CU Catholic group project: Participants in Cornell Catholic Community's annual Appalachian Service Project spent their Cornell Senior Week, May 20-27, engaged in manual labor and social outreach projects on behalf of the rural poor in Jackson County in the Cumberland Plateau of southeastern Kentucky. The project is a joint ministry of St. Paul's Catholic Church, McKee, Ky., and the Cornell Catholic Community. This year 18 undergraduate and graduate students, four alumni volunteers and the Rev. Michael Mahler and Sister Donna Fannon of the Cornell Catholic Community staff participated in the trip. The volunteers completed many projects, among them helping to build a new home for a young family, housecleaning for elderly residents, plumbing and roof repairs and planting gardens. In addition to their volunteer work in Jackson County, the Cornell students during the spring semester raised all funds needed for their trip. This year they raised over $9,000, of which approximately $3,000 will cover trip expenses, the remainder going to St. Paul's Church for its Christian outreach in Jackson County.
