Throughout the summer, Cornell's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions will offer a unique mix of talent and exciting performances during its annual free Summer Concert and Lecture Series on campus.
The series, which kicked off June 27, runs through Friday, Aug. 4, and features classical concerts, lectures, outdoor concerts and other special events. And among this summer's highlights will be the debut of the new Summer Sessions ice cream flavor: Summer Session Sarsaparilla. All events are free and open to the public.
The weekly classical concert series brings gifted composers and musicians to the Ithaca community and will be held Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Theatre Arts. No matter what your taste -- music from the 1700s to the 1900s, classical klezmer to performance art -- there will be something to please your palate. Tickets (free) are required and are available (four per person) starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Proscenium Theatre Lobby the day of the performance.
In addition to classical concerts, the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions sponsors a Wednesday night lecture series at 7:30 p.m. in Kennedy Hall's David L. Call Alumni Auditorium.
This year's series begins July 5 with Robert Morgan, Cornell's Kappa Alpha Professor of English, who will describe his personal development as a fiction writer. He also will talk about the process of telling stories in the voice of the character, particularly as a man in a female character's voice, as he did in his novel Gap Creek, a recent Oprah Winfrey Book Club selection.
The Friday night outdoor concert series begins with Samite June 30 at 7:30 p.m. on the university's Arts Quad. As Uganda's unofficial musical ambassador to the United States, Samite celebrates and preserves the music of his native Baganda culture. His songs are sung in the language of his homeland and played on traditional African instruments. The rain location is Uris Hall auditorium.
Thanks to a collaboration with colleagues at Cornell Dairy and the Department of Food Science, the Friday night outdoor concertgoers will have the chance to sample Summer Sessions' own ice cream flavor, Summer Session Sarsaparilla, designed to taste like an old-fashioned root beer float.
