The Cornell Board of Trustees authorized the administration to proceed with planning for rehabilitation of Bailey Hall, in conjunction with the State University Construction Fund (SUCF).
The project scope includes new seating, although the total number of seats must be reduced by several hundred for comfort and accessibility reasons; improved acoustics and lighting; new heating, electric and ventilating systems; and restoration of the building exterior.
Bailey Hall is a state building, but Cornell and the state will share in the cost of the $13.1-million project. The state will provide $10.6 million; Cornell's share is $2.5 million. SUCF will manage the design and construction of the renovation project, with direct involvement from Cornell regarding the scope of the project and the construction schedule. Cornell administrators estimate that it will be one to two years before there is a construction start.
Members of the Buildings and Properties Committee also approved the design for a new home for the Laboratory of Ornithology. The new facility will include 83,000 gross-square-feet of space in Sapsucker Woods, adjacent to the current lab complex. The project also calls for demolition of the existing 15,000-square-foot facility and the creation of additional wetlands and natural areas. Development of construction documents for the approximately $22 million project is under way, with a construction start possible in early 2001, providing that funding is in place.
