Faculty, staff and employers in the newly formed Business Advisory Council (BAC) came together on the Cornell campus May 8 and 9 to explore key concepts of a college education from academic and business perspectives. Susan Murphy, vice president of student and academic services, delivered the welcoming address.
The mission of BAC is to promote communication, understanding and advisory exchanges among Cornell Career Services, faculty, students and corporate constituencies.
Those attending the inaugural session of the BAC discussed mutual topics of interest. The agenda included: "e"-volving career services to meet the needs of the new economy; the future of college recruiting; conducting business in the e-world; and preparing students for today's fast-paced, rapidly changing global environment.
The participating faculty members are affiliated with the colleges of Engineering, Human Ecology and Arts and Sciences, and the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Co-chairs Gale Varma, vice president of human resources at Prudential, and Doug Calby '81, partner, Andersen Consulting, along with Karin Ash, director of Cornell Career Services, planned and facilitated the discussions. Other participating employers included Ernst & Young, Hewlett-Packard, Citigroup, Aramark, Goldman Sachs & Co., Procter & Gamble, Ford, PricewaterhouseCoopers, J.P. Morgan, Alcoa and Exxon Mobil. The corporate members agreed to continue their service on the council, which will convene regularly over the next several years.
