Writers, editors, photographers and designers in Cornell communications offices have been recognized with national awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
Robert Barker, director of University Photography, was given two awards in recognition of his photographic skills. They were a silver medal in the category "Individual Photography" and a bronze medal in the "Photographer of the Year" category.
The editorial staff of Living Bird magazine published by the Laboratory of Ornithology was given a silver medal for excellence in the category "Special Constituency Magazines." Tim Gallagher is editor in chief; Kat Dalton is designer; Leslie Intemann is associate editor; and Patty Porupski is publications assistant.
Cornell Magazine won two silver awards, one for "College and University General Interest Magazines" and one in the "Periodical Staff Writing" category. The articles honored were written by Beth Saulnier and Sharon Tregaskis.
Members of the staffs of University Publications Services and Cornell Plantations were recognized with a bronze medal in the "Individual Institutional Relations Publications" category for the 2000 Cornell Plantations calendar. Producing the calendar were designer Richanna Patrick, editor JoAnn Wimer, art director Sally Dutko and Ithaca artist Bente King.
The Cornell News Service was recognized with two national awards. The Cornell Chronicle, with editor Simeon Moss and editorial assistant Karen Walters, received a bronze medal in the category "Internal Audience Periodicals." Senior science editor David Brand and senior science writers Blaine Friedlander Jr., Susan Lang, Roger Segelken and Bill Steele received a bronze medal for "Research, Medicine and Science Writing."
Cornell University Library received two regional CASE awards, the CASE District II "Gold" Accolades awards. One was for Cornell Library READ! produced by Elizabeth Fontana, the library's communications manager who was managing editor and writer on the project, and designer Judy Burns and copy editor Patricia Leary, both of University Publications Services. The other award was in a web site category for "Beautiful Birds" rmc.library.cornell.edu/ornithology. Web designer was Jennifer Conklin, visual and electronic collections specialist in Rare and Manuscript Collections. Database design and interactivity were done by Noni Korf Vidal, former curator of visual and electronic collections, now an instructional designer in the Office of Distance Learning. The writer of the online collections guide was exhibition curator Jeanne White, retired associate director of Mann Library and bibliographer of the Hill Ornithology Collection. The project was coordinated and edited by Elizabeth Fontana.
