Michael Riley named new assistant dean of public affairs in CALS

Michael P. Riley Jr. has been named by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) as the assistant dean of public affairs. Riley succeeds Kevin Mahaney, who in July joined the State University of New York at Oswego as vice president for development and public affairs.

In this position, Riley will provide overall leadership for development, alumni affairs and public relations in CALS. He has served as director of development for CALS since December 1997. Key accomplishments during his tenure include increasing cash gifts to the college by about 57 percent, from $13.4 million to $21.1 million, and coordinating the college's Scholarship Challenge Campaign, which resulted in $8.1 million in new scholarship endowment gifts and commitments.

Riley began working for Cornell in 1987 and has held various positions in alumni affairs and development, including director of the annual fund at Cornell Law School, and he has worked for the Cornell Fund. He also is a volunteer with the Ithaca Community Childcare Center's Resource Development Advisory Group.

Riley grew up in East Greenbush, N.Y., near Albany, and graduated from Columbia High School in 1983. He graduated from Cornell in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in communication.
