Art museum celebrates 'Circa 1900' with music, poetry and tea on Nov. 10

The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art is hosting an artful afternoon Saturday, Nov. 10, from 3 to 5 p.m., with events centered on the exhibition "Circa 1900: From the Genteel Tradition to the Jazz Age." The afternoon will celebrate the intersection of the visual arts with the music and poetry of that time. The event is free and open to all.

Visitors can explore the "Circa 1900" exhibition on a tour with Johnson Museum Director Frank Robinson. This collection of works made around the turn of the last century -- paintings, sculptures, photographs and decorative arts -- have been drawn from the collections of six upstate New York museums. This exhibition dramatically evokes a period of extraordinary optimism and dynamic experimentation in art and society, with works by, among others, Cézanne, Derain, Pissarro, Eakins, Sargent, Stieglitz, Tiffany and Wright. "Circa 1900" is on view through Nov. 25.

Following the tour, at 3:30 p.m., there will be a poetry reading in English and French. Anne Berger, Cornell professor of French, will read works by Stephane Mallarmé, Guillaume Apollinaire and Arthur Rimbaud. English Professor Roger Gilbert will read poems by such American writers as Robert Frost, Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams and Wallace Stevens.

At 4 p.m. there will be a vocal and piano recital, with soprano Deborah Montgomery, baritone Randie Blooding and pianist Kathy Hansen, who will perform works by George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Leonard Bernstein, Eric Satie, Sigmund Romberg and others.

Afternoon tea and pastries will be served in the lobby of the museum.

The Johnson Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information on this or any other museum event, call 255-6464.
