Three more university faculty members have been elected as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), bringing to five the number of Cornellians honored this year. Sol M. Gruner, physics; John Guckenheimer, mathematics; and Bryan L. Isacks, geological sciences, will be recognized for their contributions to the sciences at the Feb. 16, 2002, Fellows Forum during the AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston. Also among the 288 AAAS members elected as fellows are Stephen Ceci, human development, and Yervant Terzian, astronomy.

Gruner is the director of the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) and a professor of physics. A member of the Cornell faculty since 1997, his research focuses on biological physics and development of improved detectors for synchrotron-based instruments such as CHESS.

Guckenheimer is a professor of mathematics and of theoretical and applied mechanics whose research focuses on dynamical systems theory. A member of the Cornell faculty since 1985, Guckenheimer is a former director of the Center for Applied Mathematics and was president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 1997-99.

Isacks is the William and Katherine Snee Professor of Geological Sciences and chair of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. He also is the director of the Cornell-based Institute for Study of the Continents. A member of the faculty since 1971, Isacks focuses his research on interactions of solid earth and atmosphere in mountain belts, including the central Andes and Alaska.
