Nominations for two prizes sought: The College of Human Ecology seeks nominations for the 2001 Florence Halpern Prize and the 2001 Flora Rose Prize.

The Florence Halpern Prize is awarded to a student in the college based on the following criteria:

• Any undergraduate student in the college who has demonstrated, or plans to demonstrate, through supervised field work or community service, creativity in the search for solutions to human problems is eligible to apply.

• The award is intended to recognize and reward innovation, creativity, interest in social change, caring for client groups and an ecological approach to human problem solving. The selection committee has stressed the importance of innovation. As the award description states, "evidence of innovative and effective service to the community should be shown."

• The selection committee will give preference to students whose work can be used as models in other communities.

Application forms are available in 155 Martha Van Rensselaer Hall or by e-mail at jeb12@cornell.edu , and they should be returned to Janet Brown-Aist, Human Ecology Admission, Student and Career Services, 155 MVR Hall, by Friday, March 2.

The Flora Rose Prize is awarded to the Cornell junior or senior who, in the words of the donor, "shall demonstrate the greatest promise for contributing to the growth and self-fulfillment of future generations." The criteria for selection are:

• The student has demonstrated a self-initiated activity that has had an expanded impact on others.

• The student has demonstrated abilities to successfully communicate with, influence and empower other individuals.

• The student possesses exemplary personal characteristics.

Nominations are to be sent to Janet Brown-Aist (e-mail and address above) by Friday, March 2. Nominated students will be notified and will have an opportunity to prepare a statement and to provide the selection committee with two letters of recommendation.
