The creativity and spontaneity of two great American art forms -- tap dancing and jazz music -- will combine for an enchanting evening when the Jazz Tap Ensemble, from Los Angeles, takes the stage at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts (formerly the Cornell Center for Theatre Arts) Tuesday and Wednesday, March 27 and 28.
Hailed as leaders in the recent Renaissance of tap, the Jazz Tap Ensemble will bring its touring troupe to the Kiplinger Theatre of the Schwartz Center at 8 p.m. both days. Tickets are $25 (students/seniors) and $30 (general). For tickets and information, call 254-ARTS or stop by the Schwartz Center box office weekdays, 12:30-5:30 p.m.
This Jazz Tap Ensemble concert will feature a tribute to the great masters of rhythm tap, improvisations and the electricity of true collaboration between dancers and musicians. Musical choices include the works of Dizzy Gillespie, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Cole Porter, among others.
Under the artistic direction of Lynn Dally, the Jazz Tap Ensemble has appeared in major concert halls nationally and internationally and has worked with tap masters such as Jimmy Slyde, Brenda Bufalino and Gregory Hines.
The Jazz Tap Ensemble usually travels with seven to nine of the world's most accomplished tap dancers and musicians. Their blend of classic and contemporary performance brings to audiences dance they can hear and music they can see. During their Cornell visit, a dancer and musician from the touring group will hold a master class to instruct Cornell dance students in tap dancing.
The Jazz Tap Ensemble's performances at Cornell are supported, in part, by the Cornell Council for the Arts.
