Free 2001 Cornell Summer Concert and Lecture Series announced

Cornell's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions has announced its 2001 Summer Concert and Lecture Series. The series, which runs June 26-Aug. 3, features Tuesday night classical concerts, Wednesday night lectures and Friday night concerts on the Arts Quad. All events are free and open to the public.

The Tuesday night classical concert series brings gifted composers and musicians to the Ithaca community. The first concert of the season, June 26, showcases the music of Africa and features two talented artists: Mamadou Diabate and Samite. Mamadou Diabate of West Africa is a master of the Malian kora and Samite of Uganda is an international recording artist and musician. Together, they will share what makes the music of these east-west cultures unique. This concert will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, in the Kiplinger Theatre of the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts on campus.

Free tickets (four per person) are required for all classical concerts and will be available beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Kiplinger Theatre on the day of each performance.

The Wednesday night lecture series, at 7:30 p.m. in the David L. Call Alumni Auditorium in Kennedy Hall, begins July 11 with Catherine Ryan Hyde, a critically acclaimed novelist and award-winning short story writer. Hyde, author of Pay It Forward, will address the concept of paying it forward, both fictionally and as a real-world social movement.

A great way to start the weekend is with a picnic and a Friday night concert. This year, the Friday night outdoor concert series begins with Cri du Bayou at 7:30 p.m. June 29 on the Arts Quad. This musical gumbo, served up by musicians who have studied with the Cajun masters, features accordion, double fiddles, guitar, bass, triangle, and rubboard. The debut of the new Summer Sessions ice-cream flavor also will be a highlight at this concert. The rain location for all Friday night concerts is Uris Hall auditorium.
