Members of the Student, Employee, University and Graduate and Professional Student assemblies and Faculty Senate joined staff and senior administrators Sept. 4 at the Assemblies' Annual Advance in the Community Commons building on North Campus. President Hunter Rawlings and Donald Tobias, University Assembly chair, addressed the group during dinner, and then Provost Biddy Martin, Professor John Henderson and Tracy Mitrano, policy adviser and co-director of Computer Policy and Law, gave presentations on the book Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond. Afterward, some 115 people in attendance split up into smaller groups to discuss the book that has sparked conversation across campus. In two discussion groups are: (left) graduate student Outi Salminen and Professor Charles Walcott; and (above) discussion facilitator Laurel Parker; junior Tom Mendez; Henrik Dullea, vice president for university relations; junior Scott Beemer; and sophomore Rhonya Foy.
