Fresh from a marquee performance at the 44th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in California, the Dave Holland Quintet will be flying cross-country to Ithaca to kick off the 2001-02 Cornell Concert Series Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 8 p.m. in Statler Auditorium.
Tickets for the concert -- $12-$20 for adults and $8-$12 for students of any age attending any institution -- are on sale at the Willard Straight Hall ticket office (Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sat., noon-5 p.m.; call 255-3430) and at the ticket center at Clinton House (116 N. Cayuga St., Ithaca; open Mon.-Sat., 10 a.m.-5 p.m., closed 2-3 p.m. on Sat.; call 273-4497 or 1-800-284-8422). Tickets also are available from the Cornell Concert Series web site at www.arts.cornell.edu/ccs.
The first half of the concert will feature the Dave Holland Quintet -- Robin Eubanks, trombone; Steve Nelson, vibraphone; Chris Potter, saxophones; Billy Kilson, drums; Dave Holland, bass -- alone. The second half will feature the quintet augmented by seven of Cornell's top students in the jazz program and faculty director Paul Merrill to form a 13-piece big band.
The unusual concert format was suggested by Holland himself. The 55-year-old bandleader is a distinguished teacher, and he wanted an opportunity to work with Cornell students on his new big band arrangements. Originally composed for the Dave Holland Big Band, the arrangements include one commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival that will receive its premiere three days before the Cornell performance. The remaining arrangements were written for performance at the 2000 Montreal Jazz Festival. The program will be announced from the stage.
