Francis Moon, the Joseph Ford Professor of Mechanical Engineering, has received a grant from the Humboldt Foundation of Germany to study the history of Cornell's famous Reuleaux collection of machine mechanisms. Cornell's first president, Andrew Dickson White, purchased this collection, numbering close to 250 cast iron and brass models, in 1882. More than a century later, the collection of kinematic models is one of the largest of its kind. Moon has been acting as curator of the collection and is writing a book about the creator of the models, Franz Reuleaux (1829-1905). The Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is hoping to build an endowment to preserve and display these historical models.
