Developmental psychologist Stephen J. Ceci is the co-winner of the 2003 American Psychological Association's (APA) Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology. "This award is an outstanding accolade for scientific achievement," said Harry Reis, head of scientific affairs for the APA. The award -- a plaque and $1,000 to be shared with Elizabeth F. Loftus of the University of California-Irvine -- will be presented at the APA's annual meeting in Toronto, Aug. 7, 2003. This is Ceci's fourth major scientific recognition within a year. Previously he won the APA's Bronfenbrenner Award, the Society for Research in Child Development Award for Distinguished Contributions to Public Policy for Children, and was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Ceci holds the Helen L. Carr chair in developmental psychology at Cornell and studies the accuracy of children's courtroom testimony as well as the development of intelligence and memory. He founded and co-edits the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest, published by the American Psychological Society.
Maurice J. Tauber, graduate school professor, and Catherine A. Tauber, senior research associate, both of the Department of Entomology, are co-recipients of the IOBC-NRS Distinguished Scientist Award for 2002. The International Organization for Biological Control presents this award to individuals within the Nearctic Region who have an outstanding record of significant contributions to the science and practice of biological control. This year it was the unanimous decision of the governing board that they both be honored simultaneously for their collective achievements. They will receive the award at ceremonies during the annual meeting of the Entomological Society of America at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The Taubers' research focuses on the evolution of seasonal cycles in insects, speciation, and the comparative biology and systematics of biological control agents.
