Library focus groups: Cornell University Library will be conducting focus groups to help improve the instruction library employees offer to staff, students and faculty. All Cornell faculty and instructors are invited to participate. Participants will be served refreshments and be eligible to win an electronic Personal Digital Assistant. In addition to the PDA incentive, a free lunch is provided. Here is the focus-group session schedule:

  • Graduate Student Instructors Group -- Oct. 9, 4:30-5:45 p.m., Olin Library 106.
  • Faculty Group I -- Oct. 10, 12:15-1:30 p.m., Mann Library 361.
  • Faculty Group II -- Oct. 17, 12:15-1:30 p.m., Olin Library 703.

    Scholarship applications: The following awards are open to rising seniors, graduate students or staff, as specified below. Those wanting to apply must contact Beth Fiori, fellowship coordinator in the office of Cornell Career Services, at btfl@cornell.edu. More information on the scholarships is available at: http://www.career.cornell.edu/students/grad/fellowships/prestigious.html.

    Luce Scholarship: One year internship in Asia open to all career fields. Applications sought from those under 30 years old who have made a significant contribution to their career field. Those familiar with Asian culture and language are not eligible.

    Churchill Scholarship: One year of graduate support at Cambridge University in the natural sciences, mathematics or engineering. Applications sought from those under 26 years of age with a bachelor's or master's but not a doctoral degree.

    NSF grad fellowships: Through its Graduate Research Fellowship, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awards fellowships for graduate study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, mathematics and engineering supported by the NSF. Each three-year fellowship provides a stipend of $21,500 for 12-month tenures and a cost-of-education allowance of $10,500 per tenure year. The deadline for applying is Nov. 7, 2002.
