Distance learning, up close

Psychology faculty members Timothy DeVoogd and Elizabeth Newman took the distance-learning concept personally when they traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, during the fall break to teach short courses in neuroscience at the University of the Western Cape. Here, Newman performs a quick dissection of a human brain -- to demonstrate where the hippocampus is located in relation to other major brain areas -- for UWC honors biology students. The trip was sponsored, in part, by the National Academy of Sciences and the Society for Neuroscience to bring instruction in neuroscience to South American and African colleges that lack curriculums in that field.
