His Excellency Makmur Widodo, the Indonesian ambassador to the United Nations, will present a lecture, "Indonesian Perspective on Global Conflict and Terrorism," for the Global Conflict and Terrorism class (ALS 494) Monday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 45 of Warren Hall.
Terrorist threats are of great concern to Indonesia, the country with the world's largest Muslim population, says Widodo.
Widodo was named his country's U.N. ambassador in 2001. Prior to that, he had served as the deputy ambassador since 1999. He joined the Indonesian Department of Foreign Affairs in 1975 and he became the head of their Central America and Caribbean affairs section in 1977. Three years later, Widodo became the third secretary, head, information department at the Indonesian Embassy in Stockholm.
In 1986, Widodo became the first secretary, head, Department of Disarmament at the Indonesian mission to the United Nations in New York City. By 1993, he began serving as the minister counselor at the Indonesian mission in Geneva, and in 1997, he became minister and director for international organizations there.
Widodo is a graduate of Gajahmada University in Indonesia (1969, political science) and he received his master's degree (1979, international affairs) from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
