Students show their Commitment by aiding Hospicare and CU sports

Taking a cue from the Cornell alum who pledged to donate $4 to Hospicare of Tompkins County for every person who attended the Cornell wrestling match against Harvard Feb. 16, the Cornell Commitment used the opportunity to launch "Sports Day" in a further effort to help raise money for the local organization.

And the Commitment's three programs -- the Cornell Tradition, the Cornell Presidential Research Scholars and the Meinig Family Cornell National Scholars -- went one step further in their efforts by inviting their students to attend not only the wrestling match but also the same day's Deneault Invitational Track Meet and women's ice hockey match against Vermont.

"The Commitment is trying to encourage students to show their support for sports that aren't regularly attended by the Cornell community and at the same time, support a worthy cause," said Beth Reynolds, director of the Cornell Presidential Research Scholars program.

The attendance at the Feb. 16 wrestling match, through the pledged donations, raised approximately $4,000 for Hospicare. And several Commitment students participated in the festivities, not only as spectators, but as athletes.

Clint Wattenberg '02, a Meinig Family Cornell National Scholar, and Travis Lee '05, a Cornell Tradition Fellow, are members of the wrestling team that defeated Harvard that day. Both Wattenberg and Lee are nationally ranked wrestlers -- 9th and 10th, respectively. Ann Hansgate '04, a Cornell Presidential Research Scholar, Elena Voss '02, Merili Mosely '04, Alicia Sim '04, Rich Jones '05 and Brian Emerita '05, all Meinig Family Cornell National Scholars, competed in the Deneault Invitational Track Meet. Hansgate won the women's 500-meter dash competition and Mosely was named co-MVP, breaking both the Cornell record and Barton Hall record in the 60-meter hurdles.
