Deadline for advising award is approaching

In recognition of the importance of undergraduate advising, Cornell alumnus and trustee Stephen Ashley '62, MBA'64, has established the Kendall S. Carpenter Memorial Advising Award to honor his former Cornell adviser. The deadline for submitting nominations for this year's awards is Friday, March 15.

Four individual awards of $5000 each will be made annually. Professorial faculty and senior lecturers are eligible and nominees must be active contributors to college teaching and to their field, as appropriate to their appointments, and may not have won the award previously. The awards will be paid into a departmental research account, which each recipient may use to support his or her own research, travel or other professional activities. Nominations will be accepted from students, student groups, university staff, college deans and associate deans, alumni and department chairs.

In addition to recognizing the contributions of individuals to undergraduate advising, the awards were established to improve the quality of undergraduate advising in general. Therefore, proposals are being requested from relevant units for systematic projects designed to improve the undergraduate advising experience. An award, or awards, in this category will be made annually from a pool totaling $10,000. Proposals will be accepted from university faculty and staff, college deans and associate deans and department chairs and from other relevant university units (for example, Athletics, Residence Life and the Office of the Dean of Students).

To get a complete list of the criteria for both award categories, contact the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at 433 Day Hall, 255-3062.

Carpenter Award nominations and proposals should be sent to Isaac Kramnick, vice provost for undergraduate education, at 433 Day Hall. Nominations are due by March 15.
