Freeman Peace Prize: Applications are being sought for the 17th annual Harrop and Ruth Freeman Prize in Peace Studies. The prize is given to encourage Cornell undergraduate students to pursue work or study in fields related to peace studies and conflict resolution. The value of the prize in 2002 is $2,500. Graduating seniors are eligible to apply by submitting: an application form and a brief (200-500 word) statement of purpose, a letter of recommendation from the student's adviser or a faculty member who knows his or her work well and a Cornell transcript. Preference will be given to students who plan to work in peace-related organizations, but students who are going on to graduate work in the field also are eligible for consideration. The application deadline is March 15. Women empowerment luncheon: Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. is presenting its first Women Empowerment Luncheon, titled "Triumph Over Adversity," Saturday, March 9, in the Community Commons multipurpose room, noon to 3 p.m., with a $5 soul-food lunch included. Professional women from various fields, such as law, human resources, communications, medicine and engineering, will talk about the challenges that they have faced within their industries and also about the many opportunities available for women of color. Proceeds and donations will go towards a $1000 scholarship for an incoming minority freshman.

Women's Studies awards: The Women's Studies Program has announced the availability of the Beatrice Brown Awards for graduate students working in some aspect of women and gender. these awards are small grants, generally no more than $250. They can be used for research and professional development expenses. The grants will be awarded for expenses incurred between May 1 and Oct. 31 of this year. Applications should contain a curriculum vitae, a description of the project of no more than one page, including a budget and a letter from the chair of the student's special committee. Preference will be given to students whose minor is women's studies and those submitting letters of recommendation from Women's Studies faculty. The deadline for submission of the applications to the Women's Studies office, 391 Uris Hall, is March 29.
