Kaplan Fellowship Award: Nominations/applications are being sought for the Kaplan Family Faculty Fellowship Award in Service Learning and Civic Engagement. Two $5,000 awards will be given to faculty members seeking to establish or expand innovative service-learning projects that actively involve Cornell students in community-based action research, teaching and outreach efforts that address important community-identified policy issues. Nominees/applicants must be full-time Cornell faculty members and they must be able to demonstrate involvement in public scholarship in their nomination/application. Faculty members may apply on their own or be nominated. Nomination and application materials must be submitted, together, by the deadline of 4 p.m. April 26.

Messenger-Chalmers Prize: The Messenger-Chalmers Prize, of $1,000, will be awarded to the dissertation by a graduate student "giving evidence of the best research and most fruitful thought in the field of human progress and the evolution of civilization during some period in human history or during human history as whole," the prize committee has announced. Entries are to be submitted under an assumed name (with the real name of the competitor enclosed in a sealed envelope, surperscribed with the assumed name). This envelope should be submitted together with the essay submission. Entries must be: double-spaced, single-sided, good copy quality, on 8.5-by-11 paper, with no staples or clips and in a presentable fashion. They must be submitted on or before April 15 at noon to the Dean of the University Faculty, 315 Day Hall.
