Dance and architecture students collaborate on 'Kinetic Imprints'

The Spring Dance Theatre Concert, "Kinetic Imprints," is a collaboration between dance and architecture students. It opens May 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts.

This year's Spring Dance Theatre Concert at Cornell's Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts is a study in contrasts: the movable and immovable, dance combined with the built domain.

A collaboration between Cornell dance and architecture students, "Kinetic Imprints" focuses on the concepts of body and technology in combination with built structure. Audiences will be taken on an excursion both outside and inside the Schwartz Center.

The Spring Dance Theatre Concert will be performed May 2-4 beginning at 7:30 p.m. and at following 15-minute intervals. Tickets are $4 in advance. Call 254-ARTS for tickets and information.

Under the direction of instructors Byron Suber and Shadi Nazarian, architecture and dance students chose interesting spaces in the Schwartz Center to create art from structure and dance that complement the space and that is reflective of both mediums. The installation performances are derivatives of line drawings and models from the architectural lines of the space that were input into computerized human form animation programs to bring them to life.

"This performance is a negotiation of the audience moving through the space, witnessing interventions of built structure, choreography and light and sound design," said Suber, senior lecturer in dance.

Advance ticket purchase for "Kinetic Imprints" is suggested to secure earlier audience entrance times. Patrons needing ambulatory assistance should notify the box office when purchasing tickets. For tickets and information, call or visit the box office in the Schwartz Center, 430 College Ave., 12:30-5:30 p.m., weekdays; 254-ARTS.
