Doris Davis, Cornell's associate provost for admissions and enrollment, has announced two key appointments in the university's Undergraduate Admissions Office.
Angela Griffin, senior associate director of admissions/coordinator of multicultural recruitment, has been appointed dean of admissions for the Undergraduate Admissions Office. Jason Locke, associate director of admissions/western regional coordinator and undergraduate transfer admissions coordinator in the Undergraduate Admissions Office, has been appointed director of recruitment and marketing for the Undergraduate Admissions Office.
Both appointments are effective May 1.
"These staff promotions mark a change in the way we will approach undergraduate admissions," said Davis. "Given the competitiveness of the undergraduate admissions field, particularly with regard to selective admissions, it is important that the Cornell Undergraduate Admissions Office address the many challenges that face admissions professionals."
The dean of admissions will focus on policy issues, as well as on institutional and national issues affecting undergraduate admissions, Davis said, while the director of recruitment and marketing will concentrate, specifically, on recruitment and marketing initiatives.
In her role as dean of admissions, Griffin will oversee the general operations of the office, including policy and budget development, processing, systems development and departmental human resources issues. She also will serve as the admissions liaison to the colleges and the chief admissions representative to the public.
"I am very excited about my new appointment, but humbled by it as well," Griffin said. "Having worked in admissions for 15 years at various institutions, I know the growth that the Undergraduate Admissions Office can experience with well-thought-out plans and a clear focus.
"My priorities as dean of admissions are to have a full staff of qualified and motivated individuals, strengthen our relationships and involvement with alumni, improve technology, campus programs, and develop a strong and innovative recruitment plan, especially for underrepresented minorities."
As director of recruitment and marketing, Locke will oversee all admissions recruitment activities and will be responsible for developing a university strategic recruitment initiative, as well as coordinating admissions marketing initiatives.
"I am delighted to be given this opportunity to shape the future direction of Cornell's recruitment and marketing strategies," Locke said. "I am also thrilled to be joining the admissions and enrollment leadership team and working with Associate Provost Davis and Angela Griffin, the new dean of admissions.
"This is an exciting time for Cornell University admissions. There is no doubt that Cornell is in an enviable position. But as the competition for the best students continues to grow and evolve, it is critical that we develop new strategies for communicating Cornell's strengths to prospective students, families and guidance counselors. One of my top priorities will be reviewing the full range of recruitment and marketing strategies we currently employ and developing a strategic plan that will guide our efforts. I am also especially pleased to have a resource as powerful as the Cornell Alumni Admissions Ambassador Network (CAAAN) leading our efforts in communities around the globe. CAAAN is one of our greatest assets in admissions. Supporting their involvement will certainly be another key priority."
Griffin joined Cornell in August 2000 as senior associate director of admissions/coordinator of multicultural recruitment, with extensive experience in college admissions. Before coming to Cornell she worked in admissions at Ohio University, Denison University, the University of Cincinnati and Franklin University. She also worked as director of admissions at the Galloway School in Atlanta, Ga. She earned her bachelor of science degree in organizational communication from Ohio University in 1984.
Locke joined Cornell in 1997 as an assistant/associate director of admissions in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and was promoted to acting director in December 1999. In August 2000 he was named associate director of admissions/western regional coordinator and undergraduate transfer admissions coordinator. Prior to coming to Cornell, Locke worked at the University of Vermont and Alfred University. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in American history from Alfred in 1993 and his master's degree in higher education and student affairs administration from Vermont in 1996.
