Competing against 10 other teams, Cornell's College of Engineering steel bridge team placed third in the regional conference competition at Syracuse University, April 20 and 21. The Cornell team now goes on to compete in the national competition at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, June 21 to 24.
The June event will be a one-time combination of the concrete canoe, steel
bridge and other competitions and events in honor of the 150th anniversary of the
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The 12
Cornell students, members of the engineering college's ASCE student chapter, will
be joining thousands of the best and brightest civil engineering students from across
the United States for the unique event.
The students were mentored by Teoman Pekoz, professor of civil and environmental engineering, and by Leon Virtue, civil and environmental equipment technician. The team's ASCE student adviser is Timothy Bond, manager of technical services for the civil and environmental engineering George Winter Lab.
The June event is sponsored by ASCE in collaboration with Master Builders Technologies, the American Institute of Steel Construction and several companies.
