CIT announces that Bear Access users have changes in Kerberos

Attention Bear Access users: Earlier this July, new versions of Kerberos and SideCar became available for Bear Access users. These new versions of the software that protects your passwords now handle tickets for services that use Kerberos version 5 or version 4. Your software will be updated automatically the next time you use Bear Access.

On Macintosh, the new Kerberos is noticeably different. The dialog box for your NetID and password is now larger and sports the new Kerberos icon -- a small black square with three dog heads.

To see if you have a ticket on Macintosh, look for the new Kerberos icon in the menu bar in the upper right corner of your screen. When you have a ticket, a small yellow key appears beneath the three dog heads. When you don't have a ticket, the key area turns gray. The menu bar is now the only place you can check your Kerberos status; the ticket indicator (or key box) that used to float on your screen is gone.

For more information on Kerberos for Macintosh, see http://www.cit.cornell.edu/kerberos/mac/.

Change Password incorporated into Kerberos

There will no longer be a separate Change Password utility on Windows or Macintosh Bear Access. Instead, you'll change your password by clicking on the Kerberos icon in the Windows system tray or Apple menu bar.

Demise of Disk-Free Eudora

Disk-Free Eudora has been discontinued because of reliability problems. This Bear Access service offered a way for users to get their e-mail in public labs or on someone else's computer using the familiar Eudora interface but without having to carry around an e-mail diskette.

Alternatives to Disk-Free Eudora are Travelers Mail www.cit.cornell.edu/computer/email/tmail.html or WebEmail www.cit.cornell.edu/computer/email/webemail/, which supports attachments. Both services fill essentially the same need, that of accessing a cornell.edu mailbox from a computer other than your own.
