CU Hotel School launches online courses for hospitality professionals

A new, entirely online executive education program from Cornell's School of Hotel Administration, "Essentials of Hospitality Management," premiered this summer at www.ecornell.com . It is the first online hospitality management program ever offered by Cornell's Hotel School.

Intended for hospitality industry professionals in entry- to mid-level managerial positions, the six courses that comprise the program were authored by core faculty members at the Hotel School. The new online program is co-developed by the Hotel School's Office of Executive Education, which has trained over 20,000 executives from around the globe, and eCornell, the university's online education subsidiary. Graduates of all six courses are awarded a certification in the "Essentials of Hospitality Management" from the Hotel School.

"Hospitality as an industry has experienced vast growth and now ranks as the world's largest revenue industry and largest employer," said Thomas J. Kline, director of executive education at the Hotel School. "Our mission is to deliver to the hospitality industry the most relevant educational opportunities available. Now, eCornell allows us to extend those opportunities via the Internet to working professionals everywhere. The new online program offers them the flexibility to participate at their convenience, the academic rigor of a world-renowned course of study, the best collaborative Internet technology and access to mentors throughout the coursework," said Kline.

The courses are in the core areas of managing people effectively, hospitality marketing and accounting. They are learner-centered, with modules developed especially for the Internet, assessments at the end of each course, interactive conversations with mentors and classmates, tips from industry executives, online access to Hotel School reading materials and assistance from eCornell's technology help desk.

The six courses can be accessed by enrolling through the eCornell web site listed above and paying a fee, currently $985 per course. Launched at intervals this summer and fall, the courses may be taken at any time during the year and are self-paced. Each course takes about a month to six weeks to complete. Courses may be taken individually as well as in a set.

The initiative is part of a partnership between the Hotel School and eCornell, a wholly owned for-profit subsidiary of the university that produces and delivers non-degree professional education programs in conjunction with Cornell's schools and colleges.
