United Way seeks volunteers for its 6th Day of Caring

The United Way of Tompkins County is asking people to show that they care by helping a local United Way-member agency catch up on its housekeeping or maintenance chores as part of the sixth annual "Day of Caring," Sept. 5.

Regular benefits-eligible Cornell staff and faculty members who volunteer to do hands-on work at community agencies on the Day of Caring can obtain paid release time from their jobs, contingent on approval from their supervisors. On Friday, Sept. 5, volunteers will gather at Stewart Park at 9 a.m., for registration and refreshments and to be assigned to specific work sites. At the sites, they will help out with tasks, such as painting at the YMCA, Women's Opportunity Center and GIAC; staining the playground equipment and doing outdoor maintenance work at the Franziska Racker Centers; and gardening at the new training center of Suicide Prevention and Crisis Services.

Volunteers will be treated to lunch by the community agencies where they work and, later, will be recognized at an on-campus United Way kickoff event in September.

People interested in volunteering should send e-mail to dayofcaring@cornell.edu or call 255-8206. Day of Caring is sponsored by the United Way of Tompkins County.
