Prestigious, government-funded Fulbright grants and Fulbright-Hays doctoral dissertation fellowships for the 2002-03 academic year have been awarded to a number of students at Cornell.
Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays fellowships are awarded on a nationally competitive basis to U.S. citizens, nationals and permanent residents who are graduate students or will have earned their bachelor's degrees prior to September 2002. Fulbright grants are for research abroad. Fulbright-Hays grants are specifically for students who will be conducting dissertation research overseas. Both grants cover travel and living costs, any necessary tuition at overseas universities, health insurance and a variable research allowance for the projects.
The U.S. Congress created the Fulbright program in 1946, immediately after World War II, to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange. Sen. J. William Fulbright, sponsor of the legislation, saw it as a step toward building an alternative to armed conflict. The U.S. student program awards approximately 900 grants annually and currently operates in over 140 countries worldwide.
The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad program was
established in 1961 as part of the Mutual Education and Cultural Exchange Act to
promote, improve, and develop modern foreign lan
guages and area studies throughout the educational structure of the United States.
The program provides opportunities for scholars to conduct research abroad in the field
of modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months.
Approximately 115 grants are awarded annually for research projects focusing on Africa,
East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific, South Asia, the Near East, East Central
Europe and Eurasia, Canada, Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean.
