Chekitan S. Dev, associate professor of marketing at the School of Hotel Administration, is the recipient of the 2002 John Wiley & Sons Research Award from the Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (CHRIE). The award recognizes lifetime contributions to outstanding scholarship and research in hospitality and tourism. Dev was lauded for being the winner of the Hotel School's 2001 Faculty Research Award as well as the 2001 W. Bradford Wiley Research Award from CHRIE.


The Graduate School of the University of Washington, Seattle, has invited Ross Brann, the Milton R. Konvitz Professor Judeo-Islamic studies and chair of the Department of Near Eastern Studies, to serve as a Walker Ames Professor in 2002-03. Next May, Brann will offer a university lecture based on his work in progress, Andalusi Moorings, and speak and participate in seminars, classes and informal discussions with faculty and students in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.


Ralph L. Obendorf, professor of crop physiology in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, has been awarded the honorary degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland. This award honors his scientific contributions to the field of seed biology research and to advancing the careers of many Polish scientists since 1970. The honorary doctorate degree was presented in Poland on June 29. The presentation and honorary symposium were part of the dedication for the new biology center at the University of Warmia and Mazury. Obendorf is a fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) and recipient of the 2000 Seed Science Award from CSSA.


Five faculty members at the Johnson Graduate School of Management have recently received awards: C. Annique Un, assistant professor of management and organizations, has received a faculty fellowship award given annually by Air Products & Chemicals to the Johnson School and the School of Chemical Engineering to support the career development of newly appointed faculty. Her recent research focuses on how companies create new knowledge for innovation. Melissa Thomas-Hunt, assistant professor of management and organizations, and Kathleen O'Connor, associate professor of management and organizations, have received faculty fellowship awards from the Ada Howe Kent Foundation, to be used to support their research and travel activities. Thomas-Hunt's recent research examines the contribution of expertise within diverse groups and the effects of relationships on negotiation processes and outcomes. O'Connor is an organizational psychologist whose current research concentrates on how negotiators' bargaining histories affect their performance at the negotiating table. Maureen O'Hara, the Robert W. Purcell Professor of Management and professor of finance, and Charles M.C. Lee, the Henrietta Johnson Louis Professor of Management and director of the Parker Center for Investment Research, were appointed to the new economic advisory board of the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD). In this capacity, they advise the NASD on revision of existing rules to maximize regulation benefits while minimizing costs. O'Hara's area of specialty is the microstructure of financial markets. Lee's research interests are in financial analysis, investor behavior and stock valuation.
