Pamela Wallin, Canadian consul general in New York City, will speak on the topic "The Media and Diplomacy: Influencing Public Perceptions of Canada-U.S. Relations" on the Cornell campus today, Jan. 23.
Wallin's talk will be in Kaufmann Auditorium of Goldwin Smith Hall from 3:30 to 5 p.m., and it will include a question-and-answer period. The talk is free and open to the Cornell community, and it is sponsored by the Canadians at Cornell Club (CACC).
For two decades, Wallin was one of Canada's best known and most respected television broadcast journalists. She also is the author of a number of books and has been awarded honorary doctorates by several universities. She is the first recipient of the United Nations UNIFEM Award. On June 25, 2002, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien appointed her as Canada's consul general in New York.
Wallin's talk is hosted by the CACC and co-sponsored by the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies and the Student Assembly Finance Commission.
Daniel Braun, president of the CACC, says that Wallin brings a unique perspective to assessing the key threats facing the international community, not only because of her diplomatic and journalism experience in Canada and the United States, but also because she has had an opportunity to interview, at length, many important world leaders.
