Cornell's United Way campaign sets a goal of $585,000 for 2003

It's autumn, which means it's approaching that time of year when people remember to be thankful for what they have and to lend a helping hand to those who are less fortunate. One vehicle for community giving that really will make a difference is the United Way Campaign, which is getting under way this month. This year the Tompkins County United Way campaign goal is $1.7 million, and the Cornell campus goal is $585,000.

"Cornell, since its founding, has had a tradition of outreach to and support for our community," said Harold D. Craft, Jr., chair of the 2003 Cornell United Way Campaign and Cornell's vice president for administration and chief financial officer, said in a message to the Cornell community. "Your generosity in the past has demonstrated that the faculty, staff and retirees of Cornell are good neighbors."

Already, the Ithaca community has donated more than four tons of food through the United Way's "Fill the Porch with Food" drive, with 50 percent of the donations coming from the Cornell community. That's enough food for 5,333 meals for the people in Tompkins County who rely on area food banks to make ends meet.

"This year, we ask you to join us to support the campaign," Craft said. "Our campaign contributions go to support almost 100 programs through 30 United Way member agencies and 10 community councils."

Cornell staff and faculty members can expect to receive their pledge cards for the United Way campaign by the end of this month. For more information, contact Cathy Jenner at clj8@cornell.edu.
