Two Weill Cornell Medical College scientists were presented the Young Investigator Award by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in October. Dr. Hao Wu and Dr. Christopher Lima of Weill Cornell's Department of Biochemistry both received the prestigious mayor's awards in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments in research. The award recognizes professionals under 40 years of age. Wu, a professor of biochemistry, was honored for her progress in the study of "cell survival" and "cell death signaling." Her research has helped science better understand how cells respond to illness or pathogens and, ultimately, how drugs can be created to combat abnormalities. Lima, associate professor of biochemistry, was honored for his achievements in better understanding the relationships and interactions between proteins, lipids and RNA. He has created "structural genomics," a new field in which macromolecular structure is used to characterize proteins of unknown function. Like Wu, his research is critical in determining the behavior of cells and, ultimately, in creating drugs to combat disease.
