A student team from the Johnson Graduate School of Management took first place in the Leeds School of Business/Net Impact 2003 International Case Competition March 7-8 at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. Michael Ford, MBA '04, Heather Henyon, Erin McMahon and Roland Springer, all MBA '03, competed against teams from 14 U.S. and Canadian business schools, including the Stern School at New York University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Indiana University, and faced finalists from Brigham Young and Case Western Reserve. The objective of the social-impact-oriented competition is to analyze a business case and make recommendations to increase the organization's bottom line, while using the concepts of sustainable business. The Johnson School team evaluated a large multinational pharmaceutical firm's efforts to conform to the United Nations global compact and gave recommendations. The team was awarded a first-place prize of $1,600, which the students plan to donate to a worthy organization. This is the second year of the competition and the first year the Johnson School has participated.
The Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy at Corning Community College graduated its 17th session of police recruits from the New York State Basic Course for Police Officers, March 10, and Cornell University Police recruits who attended earned several awards. Police officer candidates enrolled in the police academy Oct. 7, 2002, and completed the course Feb. 11. Twenty officers representing police departments in Tompkins, Schuyler, Chemung, Otsego, Tioga and Steuben counties successfully completed the rigors of the academy.
