Cornell students were successful in the competition for Benjamin A. Gilman study abroad scholarships for spring 2003. These awards, funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department and administered by IIE (the Institute of International Education), support study abroad by undergraduate students and are awarded in a national competition each semester. Five Cornell students received Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarships this semester; one other Cornellian was offered an award but did not accept it. There were just 12 award winners from all colleges and universities in New York state, no more than one from any other institution. Four of the awards were for $5,000 and one was for $3,400. (Two Cornell students were awarded $8,000 in Gilman funds last fall, making a total of $31,400 in Gilman awards to Cornell students during the 2002-03 academic year.)

The Cornell winners, with their colleges and programs abroad, are:

Hilary Ewing, Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)/Engineering, Ecoquest, New Zealand; Keith Hermanstyne, Human Ecology, Cornell-Michigan-Penn in Seville, Spain; Kimberley Howell, Hotel, Council on International Educational Exchange, Dominican Republic; Curtis O'Neal, CALS, Singapore exchange; Victor Zefas, Arts and Sciences, Duke in Russia. The application deadline for fall 2003 Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarships is April 15. To be eligible, study abroad students must be U.S. citizens and receive a Pell Grant as part of their financial aid package. Potential applicants can receive more information about Gilman scholarships from Cornell Abroad, at 474 Uris Hall, or the IIE Web site: http://www.iie.org.
